Right from the ancient times of sacred mantras in the Rig Vedic period to the earliest known music, there have been references where in music, lyrics and dance are interwoven. On one hand, there are dance creations inspired by beautiful poetry and and prose and on the other hand ther are music compositions specially created with dancers 's purpose of interpretation of sung word through movement.
Some of the works include Ilango Adigal's Silappadikram (5th-6th century) , Manimekhalai, Jayadeva's Ashtapadis in Gita Govinda (12-13th century) and many more. An exceptionally important work was Sarangdeva's Sangeeta Ratnakara which gives a learned account of ancient music and its form and there are some chapters on dance too. During the Bhakti Movement there were many compositions written by saints from South and North of India. One of them was Purandara Das (1484-1564) who founded the system of teaching music through regular methods in South India and his compositions are popularly chosen by the dancers. Kshetrajna (also called Kshetrayya) lived in the 17th century (belonged to the tradition of "madhura bhakti"). He is considered the father and architect of padams.
